According to a media report published by Channel 7 WXYZ in Detroit, the well-known blood thinner Pradaxa is the most complained about drug in the country. Research conducted by the channel’s sister station in Cleveland found that more Pradaxa claims of injury were filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration about Pradaxa than any other prescription medication in 2011 and 2012.

If you or a loved one has suffered from complications while taking Pradaxa and you would like to learn more about pursuing your own Pradaxa claims, consider seeking legal counsel from experienced Pradaxa lawyers today. The American Injury Attorney Group can inform you of your legal rights and help you to determine if you have a valid case.

Thousands Pursue Pradaxa Claims

According to Tom Moore, senior scientist for drug policy and safety at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, since its approval by the FDA in 2010, Pradaxa claims include 12,494 cases of serious injuries and 1,158 cases of death in the U.S. The ISMP monitors reports including the number of Pradaxa claims submitted to the FDA.

Pradaxa is used to treat atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that may significantly increase a patient’s risk of suffering from a stroke. Although the medication may potentially benefit patients in this regard, Moore asserts that Pradaxa and other anticoagulants also have a high risk of bleeding.

What is Pradaxa?

As the result of an Illinois court order, documents were released that showed evidence that Boehringer Ingelheim, manufacturer of Pradaxa, performed a study in which the company found that patients may be at an increased risk of internal bleeding. Additionally, documents indicate that the manufacturer knew that regular blood tests could help to manage the risk of internal bleeding.

However, news investigators reportedly found an internal email in which a supervisor expressed concern that requiring monitoring while taking Pradaxa could hurt profits. The document allegedly questions whether the company should publish the information and, should they choose to do so, could undermine the company’s efforts to compete with other similar products.

The FDA approved Pradaxa in 2010 and did not require regular monitoring in patients, according to several Pradaxa lawyers. Moore asserts that this could have been an opportunity to make the product safer. Instead, according to Moore in his statement, commercial instincts to increase production and sales won over consumer safety.

Currently, the FDA is continuing to review Pradaxa as well as other anticoagulants to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the products although the agency had initially maintained that both medications were equal in terms of bleeding risk. There are over 2,304 former Pradaxa users whom have sought legal counsel from Pradaxa lawyers to pursue Pradaxa claims against Boehringer Ingelheim for failing to warn the public of the risks of bleeding.

Additionally, several plaintiffs and their Pradaxa lawyers assert that the manufacturer failed to release an antidote to reverse the anti-clotting effects of the medication. Warfarin, the most popular blood thinner, can be stopped with an administration of vitamin K.
